Defending 2v2

In the run up to Christmas I thought I would take the opportunity to post the twelve session plans I completed for my FA Level 2 course, here is the second of my four linked sessions based on defending.

Key Factors:

  • Approach Quickly / Slow Down
  • Body shape & position
  • 2nd Defender covers
  • Force direction of play
  • Communication

Technical:

Players play 2v2 in a 30×10 area. Start by having the defenders misplace a pass to the attackers, whose objective is to get the ball to the end line. Rotate the players regularly. The emphasis for the defenders is on approach, angles, cover and communication.

Skill:

Played in a 30×20 area, players again play 2v2 as before, starting with a misplaced pass from the defenders to the attackers. The attackers then look to score in the goal, if the defenders get the ball they can attack the half way line. Rotate the players regularly. The emphasis for the defenders is on approach, angles, cover and communication.

Small Sided Game:

Play 4v4 + Gks  in a 40×30 grid with two floating players playing for the team in possession. The game starts and restarts with a misplaced pass from the team you are coaching. The emphasis is on coaching defending 2v2, but don’t forget to effect all the players in the defending team when you step in to coach.

Development:

If players are struggling with the session walk through the pressure, balance and cover and spend more time developing the technical aspects if defending in pairs. If players are finding it easy even out the abilities of the relative groups, so they play against players of their ability level.
